NFL Week 17 Fantasy Preview

This is it, the last week of the regular season. Week 17 is upon us, and you are either in your fantasy football championship, or your season is over at this point. But there are still plenty of DFS contests out there, so if you are looking for some insights on that, there will be plenty of info here. This is a crazy week since we have many starters sitting out, or have the threat to be pulled early if they are not need in the game. Every team is trying to protect players from getting injured, so it’s very unclear as of now.

There are many games this week that don’t have playoff implications, so let’s narrow in on some games where the teams need to win. I spoke in depth on the podcast about specific players that I like this week, so will reference them again in this.

Panthers at Falcons

This is shaping up to be one of the games of the week, since the Falcons are in a must win situation, while the Panthers have a shot to win the division title. This a rare spot where in Week 17, both teams in the same game have something to play for. This means for DFS, we know all the starters will be in for the whole game and see a normal amount of snaps. Julio Jones is line for a massive game this week, since he is up against one of the worst pass defenses in the league. Don’t really like Matt Ryan in this game, but his offensive options are all in a good spot. For the Panthers, I want to look at Christian McCaffrey and Greg Olsen, as they both should see plenty of volume in this game that has an over-under set at 45 points.

Browns at Steelers

The Steelers announced that both Big Ben and Bell will be sitting this game, so I really don’t see a ton of value on their side. Landry Jones will be under center, so if you want a punt DFS quarterback he doesn’t make the worst play since he is up against the Browns, who are simply so bad on defense. Speaking of defense, the Steelers D doesn’t make the worst play in the world, since they are up against the turnover prone Browns team. Not much to say about the Browns, as they have so few players with really any fantasy value.

Jaguars at Titans

The Titans are in a spot where they NEED to win this game in order to make the playoffs, only thing is that they are up against one of the best defenses in the entire league. This puts them in a tough spot, especially in the passing game. We know that DeMarco Murray is going to be out for this game, so Derrick Henry will get the start, and if he is going to be their main back and see the bulk of the work, he makes a good play. Their passing options are in a really tough spot since the Jags have the 1st rated DVOA against the pass, but I do like Delanie Walker from a consistency standpoint. For the Jaguars, they said they will not be resting any of their starters, so it does put them in a good spot, especially their wide receivers, since the Titans secondary has been very bad over the last half of the season.

Jets at Patriots

We all know that the Pats are going to win this game, the only question is by how much? The Pats don’t really have a ton to play for, as long as they win, they get the number one seed, which is looking like a lock at this point. There are really no plays I like on the Jets side, and basically only two plays I truly like for the Pats. First off is Rob Gronkowski, who is about 120 yards away from reaching a season long milestone, which get him a $2 Million dollar bonus. In any normal game Gronk is a good play, but with incentive on the line, he should be able to put up some big numbers.

Redskins at Giants

This game may not have a ton of value on the Giants side of the ball, but the big story comes from Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins. This could be his final game as a Redskin, and this is his time to put up some big numbers and show why he is worth that big contract. He has been given the franchise tag the past few season, and he will likely try to go out there and throw up big numbers in order to end the season on a high note. His motivation is super high for this, so even though he is out of the playoffs, I love him in this spot this week.

Saints at Buccaneers

The Saints are in a spot where they need to win in order to secure the division title, so all players will be playing. This a fantastic spot for them, since the Buccaneers’ defense ranks near the bottom of the league in nearly all defensive categories. You want to go full Saints onslaught here, Brees, Thomas, Kamar, and Ingram are all in play. They really can’t take their foot off the gas in this spot, since they risk losing a home playoff game if they do. For the Bucs, Chris Godwin, DeSean Jackson and Cameron Brate are all listed as questionable for this game, which means they will be much depleted at offensive options. Mike Evans could see a huge boost in usage, but will have a tough matchup as he will shadowed by Marshon Lattimore.

Raiders at Chargers

The Chargers need to win this game and get a bit of help in order to reach the playoffs, so they won’t be taking it easy this game. It will help that they are up against the Raiders, who are in the bottom five when it comes to pass defense. This makes is a prime spot for Phil Rivers and Keenan Allen, which make a great stack for DFS. Right now we have Melvin Gordon listed as questionable for this game, and his status probably won’t be determined until Sunday morning. Gates also makes a decent option, but his price has increased since last week. For the Raiders, the best option is Michael Crabtree who will look to bounce back after ending last week with zero catches. Their offense really hasn’t been playing well and there are better spots to go on a full slate of games.

Bills at Dolphins

The Bills are also in a spot where they need to win for a shot at the playoffs, and what that means is it will come down to a lot of LeSean McCoy. He is their go to guy on offense and is a big time dual threat out of the backfield. He has plenty of PPR value, and is a great cash game option this week. Stacking him with Tyrod Taylor isn’t a bad call, and if you want to throw in Charles Clay, you could be in a good spot. I also like the Bills defense in this spot, since they will be up against the turnover prone Jay Cutler, who threw multiple interceptions the last time these two teams played.
