Mind the Net: A Goalie Report 12.30.18

Welcome to the weekly goalie report, bringing it back from last season, so let’s jump into what we looked at last season.

Goalies are similar to pitchers in fantasy, as there are few elite ones, and then the rest. Picking up a goalie who can get a win multiple times a week is huge for your fantasy team. Most fantasy leagues have 10 standard stats they use, and goalies make up four of those categories. These are the categories: Wins, GAA, SV%, and SHO. That means just one position accounts for 40% of your head to head weekly matchup, so we should be spending extra time looking at those players. In all reality, every season-long fantasy team has players who can score goals, but having an elite goaltender can help win you your season.

I will be taking a looking at a few goalies who have multiple wins in a single week or are on the opposite side of that, with multiple losses. This can be somewhat of a heat check for goalies and can help you make decisions of who to try and add to your team via trade or waivers, and some you may want to consider dropping. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to reach me at @DFS_Tom on Twitter.

Carter Hart, Philadelphia Flyers

The Carter Hart era is underway for the Flyers and he has two wins in his first three career starts, so let’s take a look. Hart has been in the Flyer’s system since 2016 and has been hyped up a good bit since then. He is being talked up as the savior for the Flyers and their goaltending issues, which have been going on for several seasons now. If you are playing in a dynasty type league, you should be trying to get him on your roster, since he will be a focal point for several years to come. Obviously, there will be some growing pains for a young goalie, but you should be buying in long term. Not sure he is ready for everyday action and should be deployed with a bit of caution.

Matt Murray, Pittsburgh Penguins

Murray got off to a very rough start this season, missed some time with an injury, but is now back and looking good. He has won five straight starts and is looking super solid in all areas with this streak. He has given up a total of seven goals in this five-game stretch, has one shutout, and has over 30 saves in four of those five starts. The past few seasons for the Penguins have been a bit weird when it comes to their goaltending, with splitting starts, inconsistency, and a true lack of a star. Hopefully, we will see a bit of consistency moving forward with Murray, which will make him a very viable fantasy option. We will see the Penguins likely to come away with the win in most games, which is always great in fantasy, but Murray has been known for giving up a few goals every game over the past few seasons. A bit of risk, but I like the upward trend.

Devan Dubnyk, Minnesota Wild

Dubnyk is having a very interesting season, to say the least. I’m not saying you should trade him, or dump him, but let’s take a further look at some things. He hold s a 13-13-3 record this season, which is truly unlike him, considering what we’ve seen over the past few years. This is not only a sign from Dubnyk and his modes .912 save percentage but the Minnesota defense overall, who look truly average this season. They’ve also lost one of their top defenders, Matt Dumba, who will be out for a few months. Dubnyk has also yet to record a shutout this season and has allowed three or more goals in 12 of his 30 games this season. That is truly unlike him and while he might be able to turn things around himself, you should be cautious with him if he is your “number one” goaltender.
