NHL DFS Picks March 16th, 2019

NHL is back and we are going to be looking at some DFS options for tonight’s slate. We have a 9-game slate, so there are plenty of options across the board and we should see plenty of scoring.

Also, always, always check to make sure the goalie you pick is confirmed as the starter. Nothing worse than making a lineup, and the goalie not playing. There are plenty of good sources on twitter, and websites where you can get that information.

Regardless if I’m playing cash or GPPs, I always have some stacks going in my lineups. In hockey, most goals are scored with assists, so we want to target players who are either on the same line, or on the same power play unit, or both. So these stacks will include both forwards and defenders while making sure they see plenty of ice time together.

Sebastian Aho, Justin Williams, Nino Niederreiter

Here’s my hot take for the night, Carolina goes vastly overlooked in tournaments and they hang at least four goals at home en route to the win. We have a full nine game slate tonight with Washington, Tampa, Toronto, Boston, San Jose, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Chicago all in action. Oh boy, those are some heavy hitters when it comes to offensive options, which is exactly why the Hurricanes will go overlooked. They are at home and have an implied goal total set at 3.59, so there is no reason you shouldn’t be looking towards them tonight. They come in with an expected Corsi For set at 49.1, which is the fourth highest on the slate, so we know they will be solid for cash games, but the potential for lower ownership is always there and that is where you want to be attacking them. This is the first forward line for the Canes along with all three of them being on the first power-play unit. They aren’t expensive at all, which can allow you to add any other more expensive team as a secondary stack.

Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Alex Chiasson

This is or was the first forward line for the Oilers, as they have been mixing up their lines recently, but more importantly they are all on the first power-play unit together. The Oilers aren’t the best team in the league, but it’s McDavid and they are up against the Coyotes who come in with a 51.71 Corsi Against over the past month, which is the second worst of any team on the slate. This means they are giving up far too many shots ever game we want to be attacking them since the floor of fantasy points they provide is very safe. McDavid on his own always brings plenty of multi-point upside, which is what you want in tournaments. Chiasson is the cheapest of the bunch, which helps balance out the stack since Draisaitl is also expensive. They have one of the lower implied goal totals sitting at 2.64 tonight, which means not many should be on them in tournaments tonight.

Martin Jones, Goalie, San Jose Sharks

Jones and the Sharks come in as -145 home favorites against the Predators, who are struggling as of now, so we want to stack against them. Over the past month, the Predators are scoring 17.8% fewer goals per game, which is among the worst changes of any team on this slate. Their offense has come to a halt, meanwhile, the Sharks defense is allowing a 39 Corsi Against over the past month, which is the best of any team on this slate. They are simply not allowing opposing offense to create offensive chances, making this an ideal matchup for Jones.
